IBM® Tivoli® Performance Analytics (ITPA) is a solution that enhances IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM) with Performance and
Capacity Management capabilities. It adds capacity metrics and forecasting capabilities that leverages
ITM’s ability to collect metrics from systems and applications.
Through the Tivoli Data Warehouse (TDW), ITM enables the integration of historical, near-term and real-time information
in a single, customizable user interface. Reports can be created that show current and past performance of IT
Resource
Users can, for example, create reports of any monitored data at a desired level of granularity for any desired length
of time (assuming the historical data is available) and integrate that into a picture that shows resource consumption,
for example, right up until the present time.
IBM Tivoli Performance Analytics takes this one step further. By adding trending and forecasting information, users can
get at-a-glance insight into how the current trends will evolve and make simple, intuitive forecasts about when
resource constraints will pose performance and service level problems. For example, CPU capacity for a particular
critical server can be investigated by using the existing ITM real-time and historical data and applying analysis to
forecast future growth over any desired time-frame (for example minutes or months). Armed with this information, ITPA
enables IT specialists and operators to make informed decisions about potential future performance and service level
issues and take action or plan appropriately.
As ITPA is a seamless extension to ITM, once analytic data is available it can be treated just like any other ITM
metric. For example it can be used in reporting, combined into status objects and used to create events and situations.
Using trending information in reports enables users to determine where the "hot spots" are - which resources are likely
to become critical problems the soonest and to focus attention on these systems. The approach enables individual users
to be able to remain productive even as the number of components each user is expected to manage continues to grow.
