The scope of best practice Capacity Management includes Business, Service and Resource capacity activities. Ideally, the
production of the capacity plan will include all three aspects. That is, the capacity plan will start at the IT Resource
level by analyzing current demand and forecasting for expected demand. The Capacity Plan then considers the supply and
demand considerations at the IT Service level. Typically, this involves inspection of IT application usage in terms of
end-user usage and performance objectives. It also includes an impact review of scheduled changes for the IT applications.
Lastly, business activity is reviewed both retrospectively and in terms of what is expected in the future, with
consideration for impacts to the underlying IT Services and IT Resources. However, sometimes a capacity plan that focuses
on the IT Resource aspects only is required. When business and services aspects fall outside the scope it is important
that, when available, business and services capacity management output, plans and strategies are provided for the
development of the resource level capacity plan. Even if the scope is IT Resources only, it still needs to be clear in
terms of which resources. Typically, all multi-user servers are included. Scope decisions are also required for network and
storage devices, desktop machines, printers and other peripheral devices (For example ATMs) involved in delivering a
service. |
