Role: Capacity Analyst
The Capacity Analyst analyzes capacity and performance reports, incidents, threshold warnings and crossings. The analyst validates that there is adequate IT Capacity to meet required levels of service, ensures that resource capacity is optimized, and ensures that senior IT management is correctly advised on how to match Capacity and demand. The Capacity Analyst advises the Capacity Manager and the Service Level Manager about appropriate service levels or service level options.

Responsibilities

  • Ensures that appropriate levels of monitoring of resource capacity and system performance are executed, and that the information recorded in a CBD is kept up-to-date and used by all parts of the Capacity Management process
  • Contributes to the Capacity Plans identifying Capacity requirements early enough to take account resource procurement lead times
  • Documents the need for any increase or reduction in hardware based on SLR's and cost constraints
  • Provides regular management reports, which include current usage of resources, trends and forecasts
  • Sizes all proposed new systems to determine the computer and network resources required, to determine hardware utilization, performance service levels and cost implications
  • Assesses new technology and its relevance to the organization in terms of performance and cost
  • Assesses new hardware and software products for use by Capacity Management that might improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the process
  • Carries out performance testing of new systems
  • Contributes to reports on performance against targets contained in SLA's
  • Maintains a knowledge of future demand for IT resources and associated SLA's, and predicts the effects of demand on performance service levels
  • Determines what performance service levels are maintainable at a justifiable cost.
  • Determines when system resources should be tuned, and makes recommendations to IT management on the design and use of system resources to optimize their use
  • Provides resolution recommendations to performance-related Incidents and Problems
  • Ensures requirements for reliability and availability are taken into account in all Capacity planning and sizing activities
