Details

The IBM® Tivoli® Workload Scheduler product has many features and functionality that help with delivering your service at the agreed upon time or according to a service level agreement.

IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler automates, monitors, and controls the workflow through the entire IT infrastructure of your enterprise on both local and remote systems. From a single point of control, this solution analyzes the status of the production work and drives the processing of the workload according to business policies. With its unique and flexible architecture, it supports a multiple end-user environment that can be tailored to a particular service to deliver within your enterprise. Two components within this solution are the UNITL and DEADLINE time.

The UNTIL time specifies the latest time a task can be launched and the DEADLINE time specifies the latest completion time of the task. This time is determined by a particular line of business, and is based on historical data or other dependencies such as system or application availability. For example, if the CUSTOMERORDERS task takes 5 hours to complete (processing customer orders for next day delivery) and the BACKUP on the CUSTOMERORDERS database commences at 2:00am , then UNTIL time for CUSTOMERORDERS must be set for 8:30pm with the DEADLINE time of 1:30am .

We are adding a 30-minute grace period for executing the right actions, depending on critical points of notification. These notification points can be triggered by the IBM Tivoli Event Console or commencing another task or sending a SMNP trap to a third-party product.

When the suite interfaces with other system management products, it forms part of an integrated automation and systems management platform for your IT infrastructure. Several specific products, such as Tivoli Data Warehouse and Tivoli Service Level Advisor, work well together with IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler to deliver quality of service. IBM Tivoli Data Warehouse provides the data, for example, the duration of the running task, CPU utilization, Success rates, and so on to create the Service Level Agreements and also provide the historical data to fine-tune these Service Level Agreements or provide the right baseline.

In summary, IBM Tivoli Workload Scheduler:

  • Delivers service response times according to service level objectives
  • Understands dependencies on services for each line of business
  • Accommodates unpredictable usage patterns with predictive logic
  • Understands service relationships to each other and to the IT infrastructure and business process layers
