Availability management focuses on the availability of IT services and components. Availability includes the
following concepts:
Unavailability is the lack of availability of a CI (such as a service or resource). When a CI experiences a failure, it affects its availability. It must then go through activity to restore the service to operation.
Availability management focuses on planning and improving the overall availability of services of components, not on
the real-time availability monitoring of services. The IT availability metrics model is used to create metrics about service availability. Identified availability
issues may result in change requests to implement necessary changes. Other important aspects of Availability Management includes creating
the Availability Plan and defining service level targets related to availability.
Availability is closely related to capacity. That is, if a service or resource does not have sufficient
capacity, it may be considered to be unavailable by users. In addition, of a specific resource within a service
is unavailable, the capacity of that service may be reduced.
All information specific to the work of Availability Management is stored in or linked from the Availability Management Information System (AMIS).
