Concept: Assets and Configuration Items
Main Description

Assets have a strong relationship with configuration items. Assets have a lifecycle that spans procurement/development through operations and retirement.  During the time that an asset is in operation within the IT infrastructure, it may also be considered a configuration item.  At some subsequent point in time, that CI is removed from operational status and becomes part of a set of spares or possibly retired and disposed.  Thus, an asset has a longer lifecycle than a CI.
